I just replaced my ice maker in my freezer. my question is does the icemaker have an internal therostat that needs to drop to a certain temp before it starts to make ice or should it make ice when plugged in the freezer was already at freeze temp when i hooked it up .thank you for your help.

Yes, it does have a thermostat that has to drop below certain temperature before it starts a cycle. You should expect it to fill the ice bin in about 24 hours or so if it is working properly. Refrigerator repair guide
