Cold Freezer - Warm Fridge. Tried a new timer without knowing how to check it first. I tested it after I purchased and replaced the new one. Turned it until it clicked and waited 20 mins for it to turn back on. The coils did not sound like the ice was melting when it was off for the 20 mins. I believe it may be the thermostat or heater. How can I check those two things to rule them out. Step by Step and does the refridgerator need to be turned off in order to check the heater(not quite sure how that works). I would think it would need to be turned on in order to see the heater "on." But I don't want to electricute myself either - thank you for your help!

Did you see the frost built up on the back panel inside the freezer?

Yes, it covered about half of the back.

Unplug the fridge.

Remove the back panel inside the freezer (#291 on the #5 break down diagram). Unplug the defrost heater (#43 on the same break down diagram) and check it for the continuity. It should show some resistance. If it's zero or ∞, replace the defrost heater.

If there is nothing wrong, then the problem is the defrost thermostat (#23 on the same break down diagram).
