Default KitchenAid Superba Ice maker water won't stop running and is overflowing!
Model Number: ksrk25ilss01   Brand: Kitchen Aid   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

Hello,
My ice maker had stopped working, and I thought the prongs were just frozen which has happened in the past. I jiggled the prongs a little and checked that they were moving again. However a few minutes later the ice maker started calling for water and never stopped! Water was pouring into the freezer and I had to go to the basement to shut the supply to the ice maker off. I have not been successful at figuring out what stops the water when the ice tray is full of the appropriate amount of water. It must be a little float or sensor, I would guess. Does anybody know how this works?
I have searched this forum with no success with this type of problem.
Thanks,
Jeff

The ice maker is a timed fill. Something like 5-7 seconds fill time.

Sounds as if the ice maker got stuck in the fill cycle and did not advance on it's own to stop sending power to the water inlet valve.

If that is the case then I would replace the ice maker.

Here is the service manual for your ice maker, maybe you will find it helpful.

I downloaded the service manual, thanks for the link! What part of the ice maker should I be replacing? Or is there a part number for the entire ice maker?
Thanks,
Jeff

This is the replacement ice maker for your model refrigerator.

WHIRLPOOL Complete Icemaker Assembly (8 Cube), part number: AP3182733

I would replace the entire ice maker instead of trying to repair the old one, but that's just me.

In reading some about this issue, it seems like it is the water solenoid valve that is broken. Is this a separate part or is this part included in the complete ice maker assembly?
Thanks,
Jeff

Your model refrigerator uses a dual water inlet valve.
Here is the water inlet valve for your model refrigerator.
WHIRLPOOL Valve - Inlt, part number: AP5263471

This water valve is not included in a complete ice maker assembly.

Is the valve difficult to access? Do you think this is what I should replace?
Thanks a lot for your help!

To access the water inlet valve on our refrigerator your will need to pull the refrigerator out from the wall so you can get behind it. From there you will be able to see the water line that runs to the water inlet valve. Unplug the refrigerator, turn the water to the refrigerator off and remove the access panel at the bottom of the refrigerator.

With your ice maker getting stuck in the past I believe the problem is with the ice maker, but that is just my opinion.

I thawed out the overfilled ice maker and reinstalled it and then manually added some water. If the icemaker does everything properly, do you think I should replace the icemaker or the valve?

I turned on the ice maker water valve to put some water back in the line, but the ice maker has not called for any water yet. The black inlet tube is free of ice, so I don't think it is iced up.
Thanks,
Jeff
