Fridge and Freezer not cooling

evap fan is working, condenser fan is working, all coils are clean, no ice build-up, evap and condenser coils are the same temp
compressor cycles on and makes a high pitch sound and than gets very hot before it cycles back off

Richard,

If the evaporator is not covered with thin snow and the compressor is hot then most likely there is a restriction in the sealed system. It has to be serviced by a certified technician.

Gene.

Thanks for the response, when I got home from work I decided to plug it back in to recheck everything. When I plug the fridge in both fans come on and the compressor comes on for 8 seconds, goes off for about 2 minutes and than on for 8 seconds, off for 2 minutes, over and over and over. The compressor never runs long enough to even get warm. Maybe last night when I thought it was hot it was because it had been running. My wife told me around 7pm it was making a funny noise and that was when I started checking everything out.

I stopped by an appliance repair shop near work today and the tech told me I needed a starter relay, so I bought one from him, installed it, and I still have the same problem. Is the compressor bad? He also told me $400.00 to replace the compressor, is this correct?
