I have a Whirlpool side by side fridge/freezer with icemaker. Fridge works fine. The freezer works fine sometimes but frequently everything becomes soft, then the freezer will seem to work again. It is 6 years old. Any ideas?

Perhaps, during the defrost cycle the defrost thermostat fails to break the circuit when the temp of the freezer warms up. You can test it. It's located behind the back panel of the freezer on the inside. It's fastened to the evaporator coils. Refrigerator Repair Guide: How To Fix a Refrigerator - ACME HOW TO.com

Your model number doesn't match and models on a search so I couldn't find a diagram of your parts.
