Default Freezer and Fresh Food Not cold at top
Model Number: GSS20IEMB WW   Brand: GE   Age: 5 - 10 years

My fridge has not been working properly. The compressor and the compressor fan are running, and the evaporator coils are frosted. The Freezer and the Fresh Food sections are freezing at the bottom of the compartments, but the tops of the sections are warm. The Fresh Food door is opening, but the evaporator fan is not working. I got the Service Manual off of another post. In going through it, I have determined that more than 12 VDC is being applied to J2 pins 3 and 8 and the resistance of the motor from this connector, on those leads is 800 Ohms. When I measure the resistance of the evaporator fan motor at the motor connector, I get a reading of 2 KOhms. According to the diagnostic chart, I need to "Repair wiring harness".

First, is this the correct diagnosis, or is there something else that I need to look at? Second, all of the terminals in the connectors look good, so how do I repair the harnesss?

Any help would be appreciated.

Default same problem

I cant believe you have this problem...we have same problem.
Im searching online to find answers and found your post.

We have a GE side by side about 18 yrs old....think it might be going...

This a.m. is seemed warm on top. Gone all day, come home and top shelf is warm, both in frig and freezer. Weird because things on bottom of freezer are still frozen??

not sure what we are going to do..
call repair man or go shopping.
hopefully someone answers your post with some answers.

IT seems to me that there,s a circulation problem what,s happening is that the cold air is sinking and the warm air rising this is right but there should be circulation this is not happening, check to see if all air ways between the both sections [fridge/freezer] are not blocked with ice/snow if it is clear it could be a fan or fan sensor .. also make sure that the light is not staying on when the door is closed.

Default There is no air circulation

Abbie The Evaporation fan above the coils in the freezer does not run. That explains why I don't have the circulation. Both of my doors between the fresh food and freezer sections are opening. What I don't know is, is there a sensor that is keeping it from running, is my harness connector bad, is the motor bad, etc. The motor ohms out from the J2 connector (pins 3 and 8) at 800 ohms, but if I ohm it out from the motor connector in the freezer, it is 2 Kohms. Partial short?! The troubleshooting guide suggests that my wiring harness is bad, but I do not know how to replace the harness when it is running in the insulation of the freezer (I think), or if this is the actual problem.

Ge refrigerators with the motherboard in the back have had problems with the evaporator fan motor failing and blowing out the motherboard.
Only solution is a new evaporator fan motor and motherboard. Rather expensive but GE has made it this way. The evaporator motors have no protection from moisture entering the motor shaft. Might be a good idea to make a round slinger/umbrella with a hole in the center and stick it on the shaft of the new motor. Just make sure it is reasonably balanced.
