I Have a GE Side by Side purchased 2004. My sister has the same frig purchased the same time, both friges a are doing the same thing.
The freezer is freezing up causing the frig to warm. Today I replaced the Main control board, the defrost heater and the defrost themastat costing $175.oo. My question is, can we get away with just changing the heater and thermastat in the other frig or will the main board cause the new heater to go out, that is what I was told. Is there a simple way to check the main control board. The friges have been doing this for about a year, what we do is just take everthing out of the freezer and unplug the frig for about 24 hour or so, and than the frig will work fine for about 2 months. Thanks,
Mary

The cheapest way is just to replace the defective part. defrost heater, defrost thermostat. See how here. Refrigerator Repair Guide: How To Fix a Refrigerator - ACME HOW TO.com

If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

If the heater and defrost thermostat are not bad they don't need to be replaced. Did you test them.
No the board won't cause other parts to go bad.

Did you test the defrost heater. It will not defrost if the heater doesn't work.

The defrost thermostat should be closed unless it is warm.
