Default Freezer is fine but Refrigerator is freezing food
Model Number: 253.52342300   Brand: Kenmore   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

this is my first post and wondering if anyone could offer some advice. I did search around a bit and found some people with my similar problem but i want to be sure I'm on the right path.
My refrigerator is freezing our food but the freezer is working fine. The fist time this happened about a month ago I vacummed the coils in the back, cleaned everything up as best I could and the problem seemed to go away. Yesterday though, it reared it's ugly head again and is doing the smae thing (freezing food in the fridge portion). I looked at the coils again but they didn't seem to be very dirty, everything looked fine. Would this be a thermostat problem?

What are the temperature settings for the freezer and the fresh food?

Check if the damper (#115 on the diagram) closing or it's open all the time.

Gene.

Thanks for the reply, I haven't checked the temps yet so I can't comment on that but the freezer seems to be operating as it always has.
When should the damper be closed as opposed to open? In other words is there something I need to do that would cause the damper to open and close so I can see if that's working or not?

The damper operates by the temperature control and it regulates the cold air flow from the freezer into the refrigerator. If it does not close when it should it can cause the food to freeze up in the refrigerator. It also can be if you set the temperature in the refrigerator too low.

Gene.....Thanks for the reply, last night I found the vent, where the damper is in the fridge and it was blowing cold air into the fridge. I set the temperature control knob to 0 which then shut the airflow completely off. I then turned the temperature knob back up to a moderate setting (3) but as of this morning I have yet to feel any cold air coming from the vent. Does this problem point to a specific part malfunction?
Thanks again for your help.

Very likely there is nothing broken yet and it needs just a proper temperature settings. Be aware that you have to wait about 24 hours after any adjustment to see the result. Keep the thermometer inside and control the temperature.

Gene......Here's an update. The fridge did start getting cold air back through the vents but things are still freezing unless I turn the temp. control to 0 which completely shuts off the vent. Almost seems like if I set it to 0 it closes but anything beyond that from 1 - 10 things freeze, it's either wide open or closed completely and nothing in between.
Would this piont to a bad temperature control? Thanks again for all your help.

Most likely the problem is a bad damper control. Unfortunately you can not buy it separate. It comes as a kit which included the whole control panel.

- The part number for the damper control kit is AP3140255

1. Disconnect the unit from the power source.
2. Open the fresh food door and remove any items on the top shelf.
3. Remove the light shield and the temperature control housing
4. Make sure compressor is running (cold control closed).
5. Using an insulated number 22 jumper wire short between L1 and Test terminals on the Adaptive Defrost control (#13 on the diagram); this will put the refrigerator into a defrost for approximately 23 minutes.

Check for a sizzling noise in the freezer after about 10 minutes.

If there is a such noise and you can see the freezer is defrosting then replace the ADC.

If there is no any sign of defrost in the freezer then you have to check the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat for continuity. The defrost thermostat must be really cold at time of the test.

- The part number for the ADC is AP4070403

The defrost thermostat and the defrost heater come as an assembly.

- The part number for the defrost thermostat/heater assembly is AP4069923

Here are the breakdown diagrams and Replacement parts for MAYTAG MSD2756DEW | AppliancePartsPros.com
