Ok, we are getting a little nuts now, unit still does not cool. Freezer is 40 degrees, refrigerator is 58 degrees. We have throughly cleaned condenser and coils and replaced the defrost heater/thermostat unit which was burned up. There is no longer ice on the coils, the condenser and fan is running but it still will not cool. HELP!!!!!!:mad:

Check the frost pattern on the evaporator coils.
If it is only frosting up where the freon from the compressor enters the evaporator coils then you may be low on freon.

Had the freon checked told us it has 30 lbs. is that good

Cannot find any info on GE on the net.
It should say on the compressor.

Maybe this appliance guy does not know what he is doing, he told me the compressor was out but it runs fine, said he tested the freon and it had 30lbs of freon, but did not find the burned out defrost unit. We ordered a defrost timer in the hopes that it will fix the problem. We are both disabled and cannot afford to replace this refrigerator so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If there is no ice on the evaporator coils in the freezer section, then you do not have a defrost problem.

Even if the coils were iced up and you manually defrosted the fridge, it would not cause a no cool problem.

If the evaporator coils are clear and the compressor is running you either have a low freon condition or the compressor/sealed system is shot.

The evaporator coils were iced up, we replaced the defrost heater and thermorstat but still not cooling, so we ordered a new defrost timer.

I do believe, once you replace the timer, that ought to do it. Make sure you defrost the coil again, after you put in the timer. Tom ApplianceEducator.com
