hello, when i plug in my small whirlpool freezer, i can hear the compressor running and the unit cools down to proper temp, but the outer side and top are very hot to the touch, any thoughts

A model number may help others help you.

On some units the condenser coils are built into the walls so it is normal for them to get warm.

On other units there are condenser coils under the unit and they have a fan. If the coils are dirty or the fan is not running then the units walls will heat up.
