Post Warm Freezer and Fridge on Side-by-Side
Model Number: 106.50564992   Brand: Kenmore   Age: 5 - 10 years

Woke up Thanksgiving day to find the kitchen floor covered in water due to all the ice melting and running out the ice dispencer in the freezer door. After cleaning up all the mess and tossing all room temperature food I cleaned the coils, which weren't that bad since I had cleaned them recently. I refridgerator runs continuously but is blowing warm air. I noticed a couple times that the freezer actually was cold enough to freeze and the fridge section was cold but this only lasted a couple hours each time. Looking through my parts manual and doing some research online I believe that either the defrost timer or thermostat has failed. The defrost timer is the cheapest but if the thermostate has failed can it damage a new defrost timer? Should I just go-ahead and replace both or am I completely off base here?

If you refrigerator is running but not cooling, then the problem is not the defrost system.

Remove the cover on the back of the fridge and check if the compressor is running. Also check the condenser fan (next to the compressor).

Post your findings, please.

Hi Gene,
I am not the original sender however, I have the same problem. The compressor is not running and the fan is on. If I unplug the refrig, wait ten secs and then plug it back in, the compressor will run for approx ten secs and shut off?

Most likely the problem is a bad compressor or the start device on the compressor.

For more accurate advise I need the complete model number of the fridge.

Post it as a new thread, please.

Gene.

Hello, Gene,
If I turn the unit off then back on both the compressor and fan will run for a few seconds then shut-off. Essentially it is operating exactly as oconnor89 had reported with their unit. I will await your next instructions.

Most likely the problem with your refrigerator is a bad compressor.

Depending on the age and the condition it might be worth to replace the compressor.
