I have a Kenmore Elite that completely shuts off about every 2 weeks.Only the door lights remain on. The only way to get it back on is onplugging and replugging. It is then ok for another 2 weeks or so.
I see that the freezer temperature is about -20 and the food section about 40. Doesn't seem to matter what setting I use on digital control.
Any suggestions?

The first failure suspect is the control board inside the control panel in the refrigerator. It controls all functions of the refrigerator including the temperatures, the defrost and the compressor.

- The part number for the control board is AP3177964

Thanks Gene, this is what I thought after reading and searching all the posts.
Is there an instruction sheet or diagram for replacing the board?
Does this come with the part?
Thanks for the help

This part is not too difficult to replace yourself. I'm not sure if it comes with any instructions and you probably do not need them. Just be careful and do one thing at a time.

Gene,
Bought the control board and it comes with very explicit directions for installation, however it says to check the diagnostics before replacing the board.
I ran the 6 tests and everything checked out fine......except....the LED light for step 1 and 2 did not light green or red at all.....nothing.
Should I replace the board anyway?
thanks

I can not guarantee it 100%, but I would do it.

Gene and others
Here is an update on the repair. I know it is always to hear results bad or good.
Replaced the board....very easy....clips holding board were glued, or stuck on coating covering back of board.
Not necessary to break off like instructions say, just twist back and forth gently with pliers and they will break free.
After replacement of board the ice maker would not make ice.
Even after 24 hours after replacement. Fridge and freezer temperatures seem to be OK so far.
Power to the house went out for 4 hours and after it came back on everything was fine and the ice is cranking out.
Seems that it must be necessary to reset unit for a while after board is powered up. Let's hope the shutting off after 2 weeks is cured as well.
By the way the ice maker boards were also replaced about 6 weeks ago.
thanks

Well it seems like the same problem still exists.
Even when the thermostat on the new board is set on the warmest setting the freezer will go to minus 20. The fridge is fine but the freezer still is not controllable.
Can the new board be defective....are they that sensative....or is there another part that could be the fault.
I have reset the unit several times and it works for a while then down to below -20.
Any suggestions except to deep 6 the box

It seems strange that 2 control boards would be defective. How does the freezer tell the control board what the temperature in the freezer is?
Could the sensor in the freezer compartment be the problem. The food section works well and damper controlls the temp fine.
What do you think and where is the sensor
Thanks
