Default Ice Freezes into a solid block
Model Number: PFS22SBSBSS   Brand: GE   Age: 1 - 5 years

The ice tray in our fridge turns into a huge, solid block of ice. I'm trying to figure out whether I need to replace the entire ice maker, or if there's some other issue that might be causing this problem. Any thoughts on this?

1. Look for evidence of ice tray overfilling.
2. Look for gaps or tears in the door seals.
3. Look for an incomplete closing or worn seal in the ice despenser "flapper".

Thank you for your response and insights!

If the issue is related to items 1 or 3, does it make sense to simply replace the entire ice maker? I know the door seal is fine and I'm worried that I won't be able to easily assess those other issues. Will replacement of the icemaker result in the replacement of both of the parts that manage those other issues.

Thank you!

Before throwing parts at the repair, you want to eliminate the other possible causes of your ice freezing together. If you have checked and confirmed there are no gaps or tears in the door seals, you have eliminated one of the possible causes.

If the icemaker were causing this problem, you would see ice flowing from the icemaker into the ice bin, suggesting an overfill condition (something that is somewhat adjustable).

You want to make sure warm air isn't leaking in through the dispenser flap (a LOT less expensive than a replacement ice maker).

We're just trying to help you think through a step by step discovery of the cause; and the least expensive repair.

Another clue to look for is ice cream that is too soft. We can assume the defrost heater is working; you want to be sure the light is actually turning off when you close the door.

Again, thank you so much for your help!

The frozen food stays frozen and since it's a french door fridge with ice below, there's no dispenser.

Ice is being made, but it ends up freezing into the big block of ice that's at the bottom.

How do you adjust the fill amount of the ice maker?
