Default Upright freezer stops cooling after power flickers or outage
Model Number: 25328092801   Brand: Kenmore   Age: 1 - 5 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

Every time the power flickers or goes out for a few minutes, the freezer stops working.

Yesterday the lights flickered for less than a second (my computer didn't shut-down - it was that quick) and now the freezer won't cool. It has happened 3-4 times in the last 2 years since it was purchased.

We have to empty it out to save the food, unplug it for the night. Then it works fine.

The first time it happened, they replaced what I think was the circuit board or computer (under warranty but approx a $200 part). When the guy came back to install the board, his reading said the existing board was fine. He put a new one in anyway.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Sounds like the control board may have blown since it will not restart now.
Part number: AP4982498

The Sears parts site has a parts breakdown for this unit.

Here is a manual which may be helpful.

You have to join the site to download the manual but it is free and this is a very good site for manuals and other info for the appliance repair DIYer.

You cannot relate your computer and fridge to each other as they have different power supplies and therefore react differently to power spikes on the line.
I would suggest you put a surge protector on the fridge outlet, you should be able to pick one up at Home Depot etc.
Note this does not guarantee you will not have problems in the future but it will reduce the odds.

We have to empty it out to save the food, unplug it for the night. Then it works fine.
This is puzzling as you should have only had to unplug it for a few minutes for the control board to reset.

It is hard to say what is going with the voltage spike on the line, it may have been putting the unit into a defrost cycle or something else that is weird.

Check with a meter to see if the compressor is getting power.
If it is not then I would replace the control board.
