The water on my refrigerator worked fine, but I needed to use the water to fill a fish tank, and it took too long to hold the pitcher up and then carry it across the house, so I slid a small rubber tube over the spout that the water come out from, and ran it along the floor to the tank. This worked for, two hours maybe, and then the water stopped functioning. I thought it would help also letting you know that the ice maker is fine.

It's likely the water inlet valve solenoid went bad. Swap the wires on the inlet valve and try the water. It should fill the ice maker letting you know your dispenser switch is ok and the water inlet valve on the dispenser side is bad.
