This refrigerator is not cooling the freezer or the other side. I am able to turn the defrost timer and the fan which blows air from the freezer into the fresh food compartment does shut off. I don't hear the compressor running at all. The fridge is 28 years old. maybe I should scrap it?

Ideas, please.

Thanks in advance,
Charles

Check to see if the condenser fan at the back underneath the fridge is running.
Is the compressor motor near that fan running. Is it room temp or warm. When you turn the freezer off and wait a few minutes have someone turn it back on while you watch and listen to the compressor. Is there any noise coming from it. Click or hum?
Are the coils near the compressor warm ,cold or hot.

Hi. thanks for the prompt reply. The condenser is cool to the touch. The compresser does not click, hum or make any noise, but it does feel slightly warm to the touch. The fan which is at the back of the fridge and a few inches to the left of the compressor does run for a few seconds when fridge is first plugged in. it turns off and in a few minutes, the fan again starts up and then shuts off after a few seconds. As long as the fridge is plugged in this fan contines to cycle every few minutes.

Thanks for your help,
Charles

maybe I should scrap it? Maybe so. It could be the starter relay, they usually click when starting the compressor. If not then probably the compressor. Expensive.

Yup, just as I suspected. :-(

Thanks, again,
Charles
