Smile Amana ref. problems
Model Number: BC20JL   Brand: Amana   Age: More than 10 years

I have amana refrigerator,that's 20 years old.
We like this machine very well, but I have a
problem. It defrosts every 6 hours for twenty
minutes, then when it starts the fans come on
but the compreesor over load kicks out about
6 to 8 times, befor the compressor starts.
I measured the amps on attemting start up
pulls 20 amps for about 2-3 seconds, kicks out
the rest of the time it starts runs fine.
So far I replaced the starting cap.
Help, my wife really likes this thing.
Thanks, Wayne

Default Amana BC20JL problem (not cooling at all)

Hello Wayne,

I also love my 20 years old Amana BC20JL model. This really was/is a great and reliable machine. So far I never had any problems except now. The outside and inside looks like brand new.

I have a very similar problem like you described:

About every 28 seconds a relay engages followed by one (1) beep. After 2 seconds the relay drops with another beep. This cycle repeat itself every 28 seconds. What is working is the fan, which is continuously on. Also, I think it's called the "door defrost" is working. I used a watt meter and checke the following: fan running 56 watts; fan + "door defrost" uses 181 watts.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
karlheinz
