Our side-by-side Maytag was moved from New Mexico to Texas at the beginning of July. It was allowed to sit for a few days unplugged prior to the move, and again before restarting.

For 3 weeks there were no problems. Then suddenly both the fridge and freezer stopped cooling the same day. No air circulates. No fans run. It is warm in both sides. The light, however, does work.

While cleaning up the mess I noticed the arm on the icemaker was down to make ice, though the unit is not hooked up to water. I don't know how long this was down, or if it is even related.

I have tried unplugging it, then plugging it back in. No sounds - just the light when the door opens. I checked the coils in the back: they are clean as a whistle. (Not really sure how since I'm not the best housekeeper...)

Am I looking at a compressor issue, a fan issue, a thermostat or what?

Thank you for your help!

Here are your parts
Replacement parts for MAYTAG MSD2756GES REF - SXS/I&W | AppliancePartsPros.com

At the top of the list would be a thermostat problem or an adaptive defrost board problem.
Have you tried turning the thermostat back and forth?
Have you tried giving the thermostat a tap?
If it fires up when doing either of the above I would replace it.

You could unplug the unit and one side of the thermostat and then measure the thermostat contacts. They should be 0 ohms.

A jiggery pokery method would be to unplug the unit and short the two wires at the thermostat together. Make sure they cannot short to anything else, tape them if you have to. Then plug the unit in, if it fires up replace the thermostat.
Note: The above assumes that this is just a 2 wire thermostat.

If the thermostat checks out OK then you may be stuck in a defrost cycle.
It turns the compressor and the fans off.
The adaptive defrost board will have to be replaced to fix this.

The first thing I did when it quit was to unplug, wait, replug. Nothing. The next thing was to move the thermostat switches. Nothing. Then I checked the coils. All clean.

I hate to show my gender, but I need more details about locating the thermostat & adapdtive defrost board. :o

I have the control cover off the fridge side. I'm looking at 2 light bulbs, some styrofoam, a hard plastic box in the far right corner, a metal box left of the water filter, a flat metal panel along the top.

Where is the thermostat and the adaptive defrost board in all this? PLEASE tell me it's up there after the fight to get that *!%#@ cover off. Although if it's by the coils, it will be easier. At 5' reaching the top of the fridge is challenging.

Thanks for your patience.

Thermostat is Item 3 in Section 2
Adaptive defrost board is Item 13 in Section 2.

The following manual should help.
http://appliancedigest.c...rigerator-service-manual
You have to join the site to download the manual but it is free and this is a very good site for manuals and other info for the appliance repair DIYer.

Thank you. The defrost board is the culprit. I think. I'll know when the part comes in.

You are welcome.

And thanks for getting back to us. Now when others search for a similar problem they will see what actually worked instead of just suggestions about what could be the cause.
