Hi, I was wondering if someone might be able to help me. The freezer section of my refrigerator freezes up, the back wall of it builds up ice, which then causes the freezer and fridge to not cool. It had this problem about 2 years ago and I replaced the Defrost Timer. It worked fine after that, until now.

Just a month or so ago the back wall froze up again and I uplugged the fridge and let it defrost, then I turned it back on and it worked fine until now it has started to freeze up again. It seems to happen during the hottest times, like it has to work too hard, though maybe it is a coincedence?!

I will be unplugging it today after a borrowed little garage fridge cools enough to put some stuff in there, then I will let the big fridge defrost to see if it once again works after it is defrosted.

When it first did this recently I was almost going to get a part, but I don't really have the money to buy parts blindly to try. Then, when it worked again when I plugged it back up I got a bit complacent and a bit confused.

Anyway does anyone have any suggestions? I would really appreciate any.

Thank you!

Stuck,

Your description would indicate an intermittent problem in the defrost circuit. I would not expect it to be a defrost timer, at this point. So, we're looking at a defrost thermostat, heater. or loose connection.

Part number: AP4002415
Part number: AP4002415

Part number: AP4001947
Part number: AP4001947

You would want to remove the freezer back wall, once the fridge is defrosted and check for signs of moisture in the wire harness connections. You want to dry them out, make sure they are tightly attached, you may even want to wrap the connections with electrical tape or coat them with vaseline.

If you had a multimeter, you'd have it figured out in no time. The heater element would have a closed circuit, the thermostat would be an open circuit at room temperatue and a closed circuit below 35 dgrs.

Good Luck,
:) :) :)

Hi, sorry it took awhile to get back. I just wanted to say thank you! I ended up buying the defrost thermostat from you guys, without testing my old one. I just had a feeling it might be that one and it was. My refrigerator works great now, knock on wood! :o)
Thank you so much for the help and thanks for getting the part to me fast. I really appreciate it!
