I have tested the defrost heater element and its is open. The issue I am having is how to remove it. Is it nesessary to release the fan and remove the mounting housing? The element is too long to just raise it and it is behind the coils. This is a kitchenaid model KSRS25FGBT04. Thanks for any help.

Thanks Gene, I reveiwed the attachments you provided and I see some differences that makes me think I may have an earlier model. You comfirmed my thoughts that I would have to remove the fan and the shroud. However the evaporator is not situated between two styrofoam blocks it is housed in a metal bracket which does not look like it will let it pull out like the instructions show since it is like a "U" shapebracket where the evaporator can't get by the side tabs. Thanks for the part information. I will buy that when I can see my way clear to replace it. Have a great day. Don:)

You are welcome Don. Good luck and keep us posted.

Gene.
P.S. If you can post a few pictures, it might help.

Gene, Here are 3 pictures. As you can see the evaporator extends beyond the edge of the cover mounting flange. The flange, or what ever they call it, is one piece of sheet metal which extends across the back of the evaporator and down to form the collection tray. It appears that the evaporator can not come thru the opening between the flanges and if you could pull the whole thing sheet metal and all the heater could not come out the bottom because of the collection tray. So you can see my quandry. I don't know where to go from here but I have to do something soon since I have the thing apart and need to get this fixed before my wife goes crazy!

Don,

It looks to me like the drain pan can be disconnected from the heat shield (different colors). Remove the two upper screws and try to move it. The evaporator should be secured to the heat shield by a two or four clips.

Gene.
P.S. Are you sure the heater is bad? It is very rare for such heaters.
