HI, I have a fringe/ w/ freezer on top. we got it to put in the garage but when it got cold the freezer didn't work. I called the repair place and they said that it wouldn't work in the garage. We finally got it carried down into the basement after having it for almost 2 yrs. The freezer worked before winter came. Well, we just moved it and now the freezer isn't working. I took the back off in the inside of the freezer and a coil was frozen. I busted the ice off and hoped that would cure it. But it came back. How do I fix this problem? THanks sooooo much!

First off need a Model Number

Is the following correct?
The unit runs OK (compressor etc) but after a while the evaporator coils get clogged up with ice and the cooling stops.

Sounds like you have a defrost problem.

PS: Do not bust / chip the ice off the coils odds are good that you will put a hole in the coil and then the fridge will be toast. Let it defrost naturally or help it along with a hair drier.

Model # FRT17G4BW9
Serial # BA72137300

There is ice in the right side on a metal tube. I don't know if that is considered the coil or not. It doesn't seem like anything you can puncture. It is a solid metal tube. I just let it sit again unplugged w/ the door open to defrost it.

The fridge works fine. The freezer did work when it was in the garage and not freezing outside. I haven't used it over the winter b/c it doesn't stay frozen when it is freezing in our garage. As soon as we moved it to the basement it has not been working.

Thanks so much for the help!

Here are your parts

There is ice in the right side on a metal tube.

Am not sure from your description that you have a defrost problem usually the evaporator coils must be heavily iced up to cause problems. If it is not then you may have a low freon condition. If the freon is low the unit will usually run constantly the freezer gets cold but never really cold. It should be able to get down to about 5 degrees F or lower.
Also be sure that the fan in the freezer section is running when the compressor is running, though this usually shows up as a fresh food section not getting cold enough.

Here is a good link with some troubleshooting help
http://www.applianceaid.com/refrigerator.html

Check out # 10 for defrost problems
Check out # 20 for low freon problems, see the example pictures at the bottom of the page.

If it is low freon then it is probably not worth fixing.
So would like to be sure about this before putting any dollars and your time into troubleshooting the defrost system.
