Several times now, we discovered that the refrigerator turns itself off for apparantly no reason. The controll panel at the top of the refrigerator is completely blank and the lights are still working. Refrigerator turns on when changing the temperature and stays on for several days.
I replaced the control unit/card about two years ago when the fan in the freezer section stopped working properly. Ice was melting even though the freezer was still working. A Sears repairman told me the control unit needed to be replaced because the fan in the freezer was not cycling properly.
Could the control unit need to be replaced again?

I would remove the motherboard in the back AP3957581 and check for poor solder joints in the back of it, GE has had problems with these poor wave soldered boards.

Thanks, I'll do that soon.
If I do not find a problem, what would be the next step?

In general, the control board just sends encoded signals to the motherboard to control the refrigerator functions. All the drivers are on the motherboard, so any total failure like this would be the motherboard. You can confirm this by checking voltages when you have a failure. Line voltage to the motherboard, but nothing out would confirm a bad motherboard. A GE tech once said, "You could have a bad encoder(control) board but still have the fridg functions working....) This statement has tended to be correct in practice and seems logical.
