I am new to this so.... After what I believe to be the fan running, there is a very loud noise (kind of like a banging sound) of something shutting down (not sure if it is the compressor or fan?). It happens ~50% of the time when it kicks on. Freezer and refrigerator seem to be keeping things cold ok. What do I need to do to isolate the problem and get to the bottom of it? Neighbors may start complaining soon...hahaha Any help is appreciated. thanks

Probably the compressor. Remove the back panel and check the compressor when it starts. May need new compressor rubber mounting pieces.

I removed the back panel exposing the compressor and fan setup. I cleaned it out as best as I could and plugged it back in to keep my eye on the compressor (doesn't appear the fan would cause that noise, almost like a car or lawn mower back firing). I checked the rubber washers/dampeners supporting the compressor and they appear soft/normal. I will update when I hear the sound again.

It is definitely the compressor. When it shuts down, there is a loud pop like a car backfiring. Any way to fix outright or replace compressor (which at this point I don't think I can do myself) or get a new fridge?

btw...thanks for the help richappy!!!

One of the support springs is loose inside the compressor. If there is room, remove the compressor mount clips and tilt the compressor. Sometimes you can tilt it to prevent the noise.
