Default fridg not cool at all
Model Number: ED22DQ   Brand: Whirlpool   Age: More than 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

I am looking for some direct help for my side by side whirlpool (ED22DQ).

As Gene states the freezer seems fine but the ref. side is down right warm, (cool).
I do not notice any frost on the back of the freezer wall.
There is a noticable cold air blowing in te freezer on the top behind the ice maker.
On the fridge side there is little to no blowing of cold air in the upper left side where the vent comes in from the freezer side(?)

I am afraid I'm on the edge of loosing the items, as you can tell I have been up late tonight researching a troubleshoot and possible repair (fix).

This forum is the best, I am only hoping i can get some help, please, and get cooling quickly if possible.

Thanks for any and all help.

Tim

Replacement parts for ED22DQ models | AppliancePartsPros.com
Above are parts for this series of units as you can see you are missing a few digits at the end of the given model number.

Although I could not find it in the parts there is usually a lower vent between the freezer and the fresh food side. If there is one check that it is clear on both sides.

Check that the diffuser (damper) (Item 24 in Section 2) depending on the unit is open.

If both OK remove the cover in the freezer so you can inspect the evaporator coils sometimes you cannot see a defrost problem with this cover on.
Even with the coils iced/frosted over you still get cold air circulating in the freezer but it is not being pulled through the coils so does not get cold enough.
Sort of like blowing air over an ice cube.

Also it screws up the air circulation in the unit.

Default troubleshooting

Denman,

Thanks for the quick reply I will take off the back cover and see what it looks like on the back of the freezer side.

Also, where do I find the full model number posted I have a sticker on the inside of the right door but it is only posted with ED22DQ?

I will post my findings, if you could reply with farther help that would be great, (next steps)?

Thanks

inspecting with the cover removed, the coils appear to have some frost on them, not a build up of ice or frozen solid, is this the problem?

Here are the parts
Replacement parts for WHIRLPOOL ED22DQXEN01 REFRIGERATOR | AppliancePartsPros.com

The evaporator coil sounds OK.
If the coating of frost is fairly even over the coils.
If it is only in one area you may be low on freon. Another sy[tom of this is the compressor runs just about all the time.

Check that the diffuser (Item 15 in Section 2) is open. This regulates the amount of cold air entering the fresh food area.

Also did you check for a lower vent?

Denman,

There is a lower vent however I am not sure how to check it? it seems to be built in the wall and is not a pass through to the freezer side that I see.

When you ask if the diffuser is open how exactly do you check that?

On the vents cold air is almost non existiant in coming through, is there a fan that may be out or some thing to push the air?

How much cold air should be coming through??????

Thanks,

As long as there are not food items blocking it, it should be OK.

By the sound of it, it is closed as you are not getting much air through it.
To double check, you have got to take the assembly apart to the point that you can see it. It should be wide open, on the coldest setting.
It does not look like the damper in this unit is temperature regulated. Looks like it is just a manual linkage control from the fresh food control knob on the controls to the damper.
But I would check this, it would not be the first time that a manufacturer changed a part without updating the parts diagrams.

The air is pushed in by the evaporator fan.

Sorry but I do not know how to answer this.
All I can say is that it sounds like yours is not enough.

One thing you may want to check is the temperature in the freezer.
It should be 0 to 5 degrees F.
If this is not correct the fresh food side will never get down to the 40 degrees F that it should be/.
