A former tenant in a rental house we own tried to repair the freezer defrost cycle. He dismantled the area behind the freezer drawer. What and where does the thermostat clip to? I would guess it clips to the heating element on the right where it is vertical, behind the aluminum shroud (?). Maybe it attaches to the a coolant tube? Does it monitor heating or cooling? Also, the thermistor is hanging down. Where does it attach? I don't see a vacant clip or holding device. I can post a photo or two if needed.

I checked out the diagrams but they lack detail as described above.

The thermostat should clip onto the evaporator coils.

It senses when the coils are just above freezing re: all the ice has melted off the coils. It then opens disconnecting the defrost heater from the circuit, stopping it from putting excessive heat into the freezer compartment.
