The water inlet valve with the part number 4389178 is designed for refrigerators with 22 C.F. capacity or less while the water inlet valve with the part number 4389177 is designed for refrigerators with 25-27 C.F capacity. By the model number you posted the correct water valve is one with the part number 4389177 which is Appliance Parts Pros Part number: AP3160649

Hello Gene,
Thanks for your response. I would have thought that flow rate into the ice maker and chilled water dispenser would be the governing factor of the valve design rather than the cubic capacity of the fridge itself.
Is the filling of the ice maker controlled by a timer or by level of water in the ice maker itself?
The only difference I can see between the 4389177 & the 9178 is that one of the solenoids on the former is red and on the latter it is yellow. The wattage stamped on the two units for the two solenoids is the same.
Can you offer any insight into the internal design of the units that differentiates them?
While searching on the web for answers to my original question, I did find a website that indicated the two units were interchangeable.

I don't understand why this issue is so important for you as long as you have the correct part number for your refrigerator?
Gene.

Hello Gene,
I live on a small island in the Caribbean and the local Whirlpool dealer only has the 4389178 part rather than the correct part 4389177. So I was trying to understand the impact of using the 78 rather than the 77.
If needs be, I can get the correct part myself from the US but it takes more time and is more expensive.

I will forward it to the APP research department to find the full and correct answer for you. It will probably take a few days.
Gene.

Hello Gene,
Thanks for your help. It will be interesting to see what the answer is.
Anyway, I decided to order the correct part from the US and ship it in. Unfortunately, I couldn't buy it from APP because they don't ship internationally.
