Model Number: gs5shaxnb00 Brand: Whirlpool Age: Less than 1 year
The little white tank that the black fill tube pours into keeps freezing up with ice after a couple of days. The tube itself gets hard but it isn't clear that there's any ice in it. Should I replace the water valve? I also read that it could be the water pressure (and not the valve). IS the water valve difficult to replace?
Thank you for your help. Ads By Google Related Models |

If the refrigerator is less than a year old I would not do anything and call Whirlpool for the warranty service.

Well, unfortunately, it is just past warranty! I could not get the icemaker to cycle by jumping the T & H terminals (perhaps I did not have a good jumper - I'll try again) so I tested all the line resistances and voltages. All of the resistances came within the specs but the voltage between L & N as well as N & M reads 96 Volts. I checked the voltage at the pins on the wiring harness coming from the refrigerator - the voltage between the two outside pins reads 120V but the voltage between the two inside pins reads 96V!!! Any idea?

Make sure the ice maker "on-off" switch on the right side is in "on" position. Open the freezer door, press in the emitter flapper door (on the left side) to unblock the optics beam and view the diagnostics "status" LED on the right side.
If it flashes or it's "off" then the optic boards have to be replaced. - The part number for the optic boards kit is AP3137510 Here are the break down diagrams for the Whirlpool refrigerator Model GS5SHAXNB00 Gene.

I wish it were that easy! It passes the optics test with flying colors. The initial problem was with the water guide and black tube freezing up. Now nothing! I noticed that the two inner pins are also hooked up to the water valve...can that have something to do with it? I have purchased a new water valve but have not installed it yet.

Also, I'm tempted to just replace the entire icemaker! IF I were to do that, I notice that the assembly does not come with the bracket. How do you take off the three bracket screws-they are in deep-do you need a special tool?

Check for 120VAC between the pins on the wall where the black and white wires from the ice maker connected. Make sure the door switch is depressed and the emitter flopper is pressed in before testing the power. If the reading is wrong then it has nothing to do with the ice maker.
