Defrost timer

Model Number: ABB2223dew Brand: Amana Age: 1 - 5 years

Refrig warm, freezer very cold, ice forms behind back panel inside freezer. I keep reading the same comments that are not helping me. Lets start with the defrost timer, does this unit even have one? I could not find it to "turn the knob" test. Also is there a simple, obvious, visual way to tell if the defrost heater is bad or the defrost thermostat is bad? The heater does has a slight brown spot on it. Thanks
