bad contactor?

i have a whirlpool side by side refrigerator, model # ED25RFXN. hard to explain the problem. it is like the compressor is not turning on when it is supposed to. the unit has power, all the lights are on, water and ice dispensor work. just found it warm inside 2 or 3 times in the last month. unplugging it and plugging it back in do nothing. but,, if i turn the thermostat to the off position, then turn it back to the on position, it starts back up and runs fine. i live in a area with frequent power outages that only last 3 or 4 seconds. could a contactor be bad? thanks for your help.

Probably a bad cold control. Usually, if you tap on it when it fails, it will start working.

the cold control ? . . . not quite sure what that would be ? .. .do you mean the on / off / thermostat switch ? . . . is it connected to a thermocouple somewhere ?

The control in back of the knob you turn to adjust the temperature.

oh, o.k. i'll plug it back in and get it going again, and when it fails to work, i'll tap on it and see what happens. THANKS FOR THE TIP. at least if this works, i'll only have to buy one part, instead of buying parts i would just be guessing about. THANKS AGAIN :)

You are welcome. You are lucky, I sometimes get ones that take one hour to trace down an intermittent.
