I have a 4 year old GE that has been experiencing 2 separate but potentially connected problems. It started about a month ago when the water dispenser stopped working. I troubleshooted everything and couldn't find a reason why it wasn't working (tank didn't appear to be iced nor did the lines appears iced, solenoid working okay, water on etc). Two days later, while I was still trying to figure out what was going on, it started working again. This problem resurfaced for about a day last week and then just like before, it worked just fine.

Now, I came home 2 days ago to find that the ice was melting in the tray and was dripping all over my freezer. Two hours later, I looked in the freezer and found that all the food on the top two shelves of the freezer had pretty much unthawed.

My hypothesis was that the unit was having trouble regulating cooling, but not knowing what exactly was going on, I called a repair company out to take a look. He looked it over, and said that there really wasn't anything obviously wrong but that this was more of a design flaw on GE's part. He said this newer design (Energy Star) does not draw in enough air to keep things cooling properly. He also said it could be the main board, but cautioned against changing it because he said really that it was more a design problem and that even if I changed the board, he said it could just go out again. He suggested calling GE.

The guy seemed honest enough given that he only charged me a small fee to come out on a Saturday and take a look, plus he didn't try selling me anything (i.e. a new board), but I'm not sure what is going on. I don't want a repeat of having to throw out food I just bought because it unthawed and I'm really getting tired of the on again, off again water situation.

Any thoughts? Should I change the main board?
