Found freezer door slightly ajar with massive ice build up (ice, not frost). All food was thawed. Cleaned it all out, and it's not getting cold, and the fridge is also not cooling. Fans on compressor (?) run. When turn off and on control knobs, it appears to kick in. NOTE...The bottom of the freezer is colder than the top of the compartment.
Any ideas? I can easily replace the thermostat or other part, and the repair folks are 140 miles away and charge $150 to show up, so I want to avoid them.
Thank you!

Here are your parts
Replacement parts for KENMORE 59658642890 | AppliancePartsPros.com

Could not find a wiring diagram for this unit.
Sounds like the evaporator coils in the freezer are getting cold but the air is not circulating.

Is the fan in the freezer running?
If not perhaps the icing up jammed the fan and it burned out.
Check the voltage to it. If it has 120 volts and is not rotating then it is toast.
You may have to hold the freezer door switch closed for it to come on.
The fan is required to pull air through the evaporator coils so it cools properly. It also circulates the air in the freezer and fresh food section.

Unfortunately this fan does not look like it is available so if it is toast call AppliancePartsPros to check on this.

Thank you, I tried the freezer door switch in, as if its closed, and no sound of a fan. I'll get a volt meter tomorrow and try that. I'm leaving it running, although its empty (good thing we had twelve inches of snow last night for the cooler on the porch). Let me know if that is a bad idea...I don't want something else to burn out.
