Could someone tell me what determines when this refrigerator decides to defrost. I have checked out the heater etc.by the test method used to tell the control board to start defrost and everything mechanical works. What tells the board when to defrost. Door openings? once a day?

It depends on compressor run time, tempurature and the door openings. It is primarily about every 8 hours.

Is it defrosting? If not test the defrost thermostat and heater.

I forced a defrost by using the procedures outlined in the electric schematic to tell the board to order a defrost and the refrigerator defrosted. Is their a way to tell if the boar is recieving the compressor on and off time as well as the door openings? Or do i just asume it is the board and replace it?

If you followed the proceedure for the board to kick it into defrost, did it go into defrost mode? If not test the defrost thermostat first (aka bi-metal) with an ohm meter. If it has continuity ohm the defrost heater if it has continuity then the board is the problem.

Yes the defroster works. I now believe either the board is bad or the wires connecting the compressor or the door opening counter are comprimised. Since the compressor shuts off during defrost I will assume they are ok. and check the door opening connection. If this is ok does this mean the board is bad?

I think the adaptive defrost board is your problem.
