new defrost timer slightly different than old. New timer has a black lead and old timer doesn't, otherwise identical. Tried black lead on terminal 1 , and not attached to anything. When I plug new timer into socket fridge wont run at all. When I switch it back to old fridge starts fine. Defrost not working. replaced bimetal defrost switch, and timer. Next on the list was the defrost coil.

Your refrigerator is a modern one, some of the older Coldspots used a timer motor connection to the cold control, but probably not yours. Put the black timer wire on the middle terminal of the three terminals in a row, that will give you the standard defrost period of around 9 hours. Turn the new defrost timer clockwise, probably in defrost, compressor should now run.
