We have a whirlpool Gold Fridge/freezer combo (with the freezer on top), there is water in the bottom of the fridge underneath the crisper bins. We thought it might be coming from the the tube at the back of the fridge where the fridge/freezer connects and cleaned that out of any ice build up (there was only some).

We've put hot water into the drain plug in the bottom of the fridge (inside) to melt anything) and adjusted the temperature from high to low and back again.

This problem has been going on for months and we can't seem to fix it and in fact it is getting worse. I have entire ice chunks building up under the crisper - that start out as puddles of water and just grow and grow.

We didn't buy the fridge - came with the house. It shouldn't be more than 4 years old.

Any help would be appreciated.

Most likely the problem with your fridge is a clogged and frozen drain inside the freezer. Remove the floor (#49 on the liner break down diagram)and the rear panel (#16 on the same break down diagram) inside the freezer and you'll have the access to the drain which is under the evaporator coil (#5 on the unit break down diagram) in the back of the freezer.

Using a hair dryer melt all ice on the bottom and under the evaporator coil and defrost the drain as much as possible. Finish defrosting the drain using a hot water. Make sure a hot water does go through the drain.

Assemble it in the back order.

Thanks so much for the advice. You were completely right, that was definitely the problem and very easy to solve once we got the right advice. You saved us a lot of money in either buying a new appliance or having someone come over to diagnose it / use a hair dyrer.

Since the water is showing up inside the refrigerator section you may want to check the condensation drain and see if it is plugged. Moisture condenses inside refrigerators, is collected and drained through the back of the fridge down to an evaporation pan mounted under the motor assembly. A build up of "gunk" blocks the drain line and causes the condensation to accumulate in the bottom of the fridge and run out onto the surrounding floor. Once you gain access to the condensate collector you should find where the tube goes through the back wall of the fridge. The tube can normally be cleaned where it is by using hot water. Check to see it arrives on the evaporation pan! Clean the condensate collector. Some collectors are visible on the back wall mounted between the shelves. Some are concealed as part of the light/control assembly.
