My side by side refrigerator / freezer was making a loud noise and defrosting / not cooling. the repairman said i needed a new compressor that would cost us around $500-600 to replace. the icemaker is also not working on this 6 year old unit that's given us enough problems since arriving in our home. Any instructions available and can we replace the compressor ourselves under your guidance?

If the compressor needs replacing you need a pro. Usually it makes more sense to put those dollars towards a new unit. Compressor replacement often does not provide a long term fix.

You did not say what was making the loud noise?
So the first thing I would do is check that.
May be something as simple as a bad compressor mount.
If it is coming from the compressor then I would say that the tech's diagnosis is correct.
