how do you troubleshoo the deftost timer and thermocouple? is there a easy way to check the whole defrost cycle?

i don't have the model on hand right now, i am at work but it is probably about a 8 or 9 year old side by side ge .

ok, post it when you get it, Is it a SxS, and where are the control knobs for the temperature, and what is the probblem with it?

the control knobs are in the refrig section top rear, is that where the timer is located.

Yes, if it's the fridge I'm thinking of, remove the knobs, then remove the shield and it's on the right.

so is there a easy way to check it? it is a ge refrig. i don't remember if i mentioned that, and if i unplug and let it defrost for a couple of days it works for about 2 weeks. also is the heater the most common problem when refrig. doesn't defrost?

Most likely problem is the heater, remove the back panel of the freezer section, and visually look at the heater, if the glass tube is black, replace the heater.
