our frig cools well, but when the motor stops it frequently makes a loud "thunk" sound and a brief rattle ... rather like 1970's cars used to diesel when they were turned off.

what is wrong?
can I fix it?
prognosis for the life of the unit?

what is wrong?
Probably a spring has broken in side the compressor.
Though I would check the compressor mounts just in case you get lucky and it is just the compressor moving.

can I fix it?
No if it is a broken spring etc. inside the compressor.
You would need to replace the compressor so would need a pro and it will be expensive with no guarantee of a long term fix. Better to put the dollars towards a new unit.

prognosis for the life of the unit?
They can last a long time like this but can no longer be trusted.
Loosing hundreds of dollars in spoiled food is not worth the risk.
At least I would not gamble on it.
Would make a decent beer fridge.

Thanks!

If it is a mount, how would I fix it? Would it just be something like just replacing a bolt and would that be obvious to see? I realize that if the mounting point is broken, a new unit is in our future, right?

(Unfortunately, at this moment, I can't pull the unit out due to a rather nasty broken ankle ... so I can't pull it out to look at the mounts. But I might be able to Tom Sawyer someone else.)

You will see that the compressor is on rubber mounts /feet with bolts through them. Should be obvious. Also check that all the bolts are tight.

A broken mount you could probably jiggery pokery something.
A broken internal spring is not fixable.
