The whita connector on the compressor was smoking. What is the likelyhood the compressor is dead or it is my lack of cleaning

Check your relay/overload switch. That's what was wrong with mine and I replaced it. Check my thread headed "Maytag fridge burning" the moderator Gene helped me out alot.

Cleaning can definitely be a problem.

It is a gamble but you can improve the odds by checking the windings with a meter. Check that neither is burned out also check that one of them has not shorted to the case.
