Model Number: PTI22MBMALBB Brand: GE Age: 5 - 10 years
The fan in the freezer keeps freezing in water as it is at the end of a tray and water freezes in the tray which freezes the fan which then causes the freezer not to work properly. We then get water that leaks into the refrigerator. When this happens we turn it completely off and thaw everything out. It then will work again for 1 to 4 months and then freezes up again. We have had it looked at twice by professionals and they simply take the bottom of the freezer off and thaw it out and state that nothing is wrong. We've been putting up with this for three years having to move all contents in the refrigerator and freezer to turn it off and let it thaw. Is this a design defect if nothing is wrong? It started doing this when it was about 3 1/2 years old. I have talked to GE and they are of no help and offered to sell me a new one for $100 off the list price. Can anyone help?

Sounds like a frozen defrost drain. Too cold in the freezer. What needs to happen is the drain tube needs thawed out and a piece of bare wire tied around the defrost heater and the other end shoved down the drain hole. This will transfer heat from the heater down the drain during a defrost cycle and keep that from freezing shut again.
Also, keep a thermometer in the freezer and make sure the temp is always 0. This is important. 20 below will cause this condition and freeze the food in your crispers. |
