All of a sudden our refrigerator and freezer quit cooling. I've checked the fan and its working. I've cleaned the coils, but when the compressor kicks on it is very noisy and only stays on for 10-15 seconds. Is my compressor going out? If so, is it possible for me to replace it myself?

You need special equipment to replace the compressor,and a refrigeration license.
It seems like your compressor is drawing excessive current and the klixon is tripping off and staying off for a few minutes.If so, you can try a new start device AP4079373, but no guarantee it will work.
If you have a meter, verify your compressor is getting 115 volts while it is trying to start.
