I bought a 3 yr old fridge from my son to use as a spare. The only spot I had to put it was on our screened in porch (exposed to outside temps). I noticed that the freezer no longer freezes but the refrigerator section appears to be cooling OK (temps now are in the 10's 20's & 30's at night. The unit did OK during warmer weather. Is there a problem with having the unit outside (do the low temps affect the functioning of the freezer)? Or....is there a problem with the Frigidaire? Thanks for any help I can get.

According to the manufacturer instructions the refrigerator should not be installed where the temperature will drop bellow 55°F or rise above 110°F.

You have a couple problems with running your unit at the temperatures you list. 1. When the outside temperature is below/around freezing the unit does a defrost cycle but the compressor does not come on after the defrost so the heat from defrost melts the food in the freezer. Frigidaire does make a kit that is basically a small heater (See below). It adds some heat to the thermostat and fools the unit into thinking it is warm so it turns on the compressor after a defrost cycle. 2. When you get much below freezing the oil in the compressor starts to thicken. This makes the compressor hard to start and it does not get lubricated properly till the compressor warms up. Part number: AP3722172
Click on the picture for more info. Also you can Google "Frigidaire garage kit" for info on exactly how it works etc. For Problem 2, you would have to wire in a thermostat that would shut power off to the unit when the temperature is below a set point. Sort of like a electric heater thermostat but instead of turning on at a certain temperature it would have to turn off. Not sure wher you could get such a thermostat. Or get something like a battery blanket to keep the compressor warm. |
