I have an Amana side-by-side that has is keeping cool on both the refrigerator and freezer side by it will not make ice or freeze food in the freezer section. I had a service technician come out who cleaned the coils and told me the compressor was shot and to buy a new refrigerator. I checked on line and find there are replacement compressors for under $250 dollars. Did I get the correct advice for the $60 I paid the service technician or can this be repaired.

Well he could be partially right it could be an inefficient compressor but if the compressor is running it's more likely a leak which could be unaccesable to repair Pull the evaporator cover /panel out of the freezer section and see what kind of frost pattern is on the coils if there is a ice ball at the very beginning and the rest of the coil is dry it's a sealed system repair if the coil is heavily frosted all the way down its a dfrost problem
