When I removed the compressor cover to clean under my refridgerator I found the padded part was shredded and was being drawn into the compressor. What is the purpose of this padding? Is it just for sound reduction? Can I remove it?

Sasha,

You can remove the insulation pad if you wish.

There might be a very slight increase in the operation noise level, most units no longer have the insulation applied to the cover.

However, you do need to, must install the cover, to promote proper air flow and heat transfer in the compressor compartment.

Good Luck,
:) :) :)
