The new, high efficiency compressors cost between $200-300 and are very fragile. Most of the compressor failures I see are due to contamination in the system due to a refrigerant leak which adds a new dimension to the problem. With Amana systems, lots of leaks are due to tubing leaks that are unrepairable. Other leaks like evaporator leaks just cost more money, like $150. For pro's that do this, I am sure they would admit they have a percentage of failures. I have replaced many R12 compressors in the past, but the new one's I do not based on high cost, and many other issues. Total cost for a pro. $400- 800. Some refrigerators like Sub-Zero are worth fixing, but not yours, sorry.
