My fridge is not cooling. Tapped the area in the compartment where the temp. knobs are and it kicked on a few times. Now that is not working. What part do I need?

Deetc,

First,

Did the whole unit quit cooling, or was it just the refrigerator side ?

There are three parts in the control panel, that control the temperature and operation of the fridge.

1) The cold control
This cools both compartments and makes the compressor run.

2) The defrost timer
This determines when the fridge needs to defrost

3) The auto damper assembly
This controls the cool air flow into the refrigerator compartment.

If the cold control fails, neither compartment will cool.

If the defrost timer fails, neither compartment will cool
(if it fails in a defrost increment, it won't allow the compressor to start and run) usually you will see ice on the back wall of the freezer compartment and the refrigerator won't cool proper.

If the auto damper fails, the refrigerator side won't cool, but the freezer side is OK.

When it fails again, don't tap on the panel, Jiggle the freezer control knob,

If it starts, you've most likely have a bad temperature control,

Part number: AP2061783
Part number: AP2061783

If it doesn't start, assume you have a bad defrost timer,

Part number: AP2061695
Part number: AP2061695

That's the best I can do for you at this time.

I ran into this problem last weekend with a customer's fridge... He had to tap on the control (area) to make it run the compressor and over several months had to turn the control colder a little each time to keep decents temps... I blamed the thermostat and after replacing/plugging the unit back in - nothing; no fan, compressor would not run, only the light would come on... Further troubleshooting and puzzled looks at each other finally revealed the culprit - one of the spade terminal connections on the wire... Although visually it looked normal the factory crimping wouldn't always make contact between the terminal and the wire... I replaced the spade terminals of each wire going to the thermostat and the customer insisted on leaving the new thermostat in since he lived far out in the Alaskan bush to begin with and was not satisfied with the original control although I assume it was still good... His fridge was less than two years old (Sears)... So DEET, if any of Joe's suggestions don't fix your problem then take a closer look at your spade terminal connectors.... cheers, kooler
