A repair service determined that I needed a new defrost control circuit board - along with the defrost heater and bimetal. The symptoms were refridge not cooling properly and freezer had uneven temps (cold on bottom, warm on top).

The serviceman defrosted the freezer and everything began working. I would guess I have a few days before the frost builds up again. I plan on doing the repair myself - looking to save more than a few bucks.

My questions are:

Is the circuit board only accessible from the back of the refrigerator? If so, could the serviceman accurately conclude that the circuit board was bad without accessing the rear of the refrigerator? (He did not)

Is the defrost heater only accessible from the back of the refrigerator? Is it likely that this failed but the circuit board is ok?

What is the best way to determine these things?
