I'm in the market for a refridgerator to replace my 28-yr old GE 19 cu ft top freezer model. It works, but I understand that newer units are more efficient and will save $$ over the years.

A friend of mine purchased a Kenmore and found that it has an LG linear compressor which is supposed to be very efficient. He says that the compressor ramps up and down instead of starting and stopping abruptly. That's sounds like a good thing. Here's an article on it.
LG Electronics launches its third generation linear compressor | LG Electronics | AMEinfo.com

Any one have any good/bad comments on this type of compressor?
How can I tell if the model I'm looking has this compressor?

Any other advice on what's good/bad on the market?

Thanks
