This is an eight year old GE box with light use from '02 to '07. Stood unplugged for 2 years ('07 - '09). Moved. In use now for 10 months.
Two months ago, noticed it was not holding temp. We thought due to the door possibly being ajar. It ran continually when the door was ajar for a couple days and lost cold air. Unit shut down. Then we unplugged, restarted it OK and corrected door ajar. Unit initially pulled the temp in freezer down to zero again and cycled off. However would not restart to continue to cycle and temp went back up to near room.
What is the issue with this box; what part (s) can I replace to get this cycling correctly and holding proper temp? Compressor seems fine, since it cooled for near 18 hrs, then nothing.
Thanks.

Are you able to make it work again by unplugging and plugging it back?

Gene: Yes, if plugged in now, it will cool right down to zero in the freezer (running some 12-18 hrs.), shut off, then nothing. No cycling. Thanks. Doug

Doug, Remove the control housing and unplug the encoder (#424 on the diagram). If the refrigerator will restart, the encoder has to be replaced. - The encoder Part number: AP3996141

Thanks Gene. When you say restart, do you mean run at all, or do you mean cycle after an initial run period?
You are saying that if the fridge runs, the encoder is bad. Correct?

Quote:...it will cool right down to zero in the freezer (running some 12-18 hrs.), shut off, then nothing. No cycling... I meant restart at this point. Yes, if it would restart, then the encoder more likely is the problem. Gene.

Gene: This test makes no sense to me. Either way, it seems to be the encoder part. From what you were saying, if it doesn't restart after initial cool cycle, its the encoder. Alternatively, if it does restart without encoder plugged in, what else could it be? - I'm confused. You don't have a phone number I can call to speak with you directly? I am at 212-345-2860 at work.
Thanks much.
Doug.

Doug,
With the encoder unplugged the main control board will revert to the preset temperature, so if the encoder is bad, unplugging it will put the refrigerator back to work. If nothing changes, the problem is elsewhere, most likely in the main control board.
Gene.
