Model Number: MFC20M4FW0 Brand: Frigidaire Age: 5 - 10 years
I picked up a Frigidaire chest freezer off Craigslist for next to nothing. Model number MFC20M4FW0. The guy said it didn't work very well but I figured I could fix it for cheap assuming it had a busted thermostat. It turns out it doesn't work at all. Plugging it in, I find the compressor starts right up and hums along quietly, but the walls of the freezer don't get cold or even cool after a couple minutes of running.
After pulling off the service panel, it looks like rats lived inside the compressor area for a while. I noticed the relay had a burnt spot on it, and the insulation on one of the thermostat wires was chewed. I also noticed what looks like a ground tab connecting to the chassis. However, I don't see a loose ground wire or connection anywhere. Despite the fact that the electrical needs attention, I'm guessing that all works well enough to allow the compressor to run. My gut tells me it's a mechanical problem (i.e. leak) and that I got screwed as I doubt I can get the system serviced for cheap. What do you think? Ads By Google Related Models |

I am assuming that the compressor runs constantly and does not cycle.
I agree with you that since the compressor does run that either the compressor is toast, you are out of freon or you are low on freon. All 3 will be an expensive repair. I do not know if you left the unit unplugged for 24 hours after moving it. If not you may want to try this.

It was sitting for about 2 months before I plugged it in. I assumed that gave it enough time for the oil and stuff in the lines to settle out. Quote:
