Default side by side fridge not cooling or freezing
Model Number: ED0GTQXKQ00   Brand: Whirlpool   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com
Have a side by side, a few weeks ago noticed freezer side not closed properly and freezables had thawed out. Fixed the ice bucket problem and then a few weeks later the same thawing existed. checked the ice bucket again and light switch. Now both sides have quit cooling, I have unplugged it overnight and plugged it in the next day, the air blowing through the vents is a little cool or roon temp, the compressor seems to kick off and on but the fridge does not cool. coulf I have damaged the control board by it being left improperly shut or is there a relay going bad that is not allowing the fridge to get cold? thanks in advance

No,
I would not think you have "caused" any damaged to the control.

My first suspicion is a defrost problem.

It will take 24 hours for the compartments to cool down to operating temperature(so the air will not feel cold).

After a few days, or when you notice the compartments not cool again, check the back wall of the freezer compartment for frost, snow or ice(make sure both doors are closed proper, until then).

This is the basic indication of a defrost problem(heater, thermostat or d/f timer).

When the compressor turns on, how long does it run ?

You may have a problem in that area, but at this time,I would look for a defrost problem first.

Looking to hear from you soon,

fridge was unplugged for 24 hours, the compressor seems to kick on for 10 minutes then clicks off, could it be a starter relay. The freezer part has frozen over before at all, just did not cool enough to make ice. Now both sides are doing the same. I was afraid of the compressor being bad but it is kicking on so i was also wondering about coolant refill as well. I'm lost!

Well,

As for your compressor needing a re fill, that doesn't really exist, unless you have a very minor leak(1or2 micron or less) That's not the problem, right now.

Yes you could have a sealed system problem but, at this point it's not likely. You'd need specialized meters and tools to diagnose that problem.
Besides your compressor cycling on/off is normal.

I'd be looking for other component failures, Temperater control, defrost timer, maybe a bad evaporator fan motor, but at this point, it's most likely a defrost problem(the most common problem).

Let's get the more common , most likely problems out of the way, and go from there.
